Freixenet Mionetto USA added a new signal to the lighter-drinking category this week. In an August 4 release carried by Wine Industry Advisor, the company said Freixenet is entering ready-to-drink with Freixenet Solare Spritz, a 250 ml canned spritz sold in four-packs with a suggested retail price of $15.
The release describes the drink as a citrus spritz made with Spanish lemon and clementine flavors, rosemary, and thyme. It lists the product at 110 calories and 5% ABV per can. Freixenet tied the launch to what it called changing American drinking habits, with vice president of marketing Lindsey Willey saying consumers are looking for more elevated options that fit everyday lifestyles.
This is not a non-alcoholic wine launch. It matters for the same reason, though: large wine companies are still building around moderation instead of treating it as a short seasonal trend. Freixenet's own release notes that the company previously launched an Alcohol-Removed product in 2020, then added this lower-ABV canned format in 2026.
Consumer polling from Canada points in the same direction. INsauga reported this week that its poll of nearly 5,000 readers found about three-quarters said they drink less alcohol or none at all. The poll is not a national study, but it gives another current data point for how often moderation now shows up in everyday consumer behavior.
The two items sit on different shelves. One is a 5% canned spritz from a global sparkling-wine company. The other is a reader poll about reduced alcohol consumption. Together, they show the same pressure from two sides: beverage companies are launching lighter formats, and consumers are saying they want fewer full-strength occasions.
For shoppers comparing categories, the distinction still matters. Low-ABV canned spritzes are not the same as alcohol-removed wine, which starts as wine and has the alcohol removed after fermentation. The shared thread is demand: more buyers want adult-tasting options that do not assume every occasion calls for a full-strength bottle.
